In 2009, the Turkish Seed Industry Association will host the ISF 2009 World Seed Congress, first organized in 1924. With the concept being ‘Anatolia, the Cradle of Civilization’, I have no doubt that this congress, bringing together seed corporations from around the world; will contribute substantially to the sharing of new technological developments as well as the forging of new friendships.

I would like to thank the International Seed Federation for choosing Turkey as the venue for this congress, and the Turkish Seed Industry Association for undertaking an important role in the organization of the congress.

The seed industry, which has gained considerable commercial prominence on a global scale, is a priority of our agricultural policy. Conjoining Europe and Asia, Turkey is an important country from both a geopolitical and agricultural point of view. We will be happy to welcome you here in the heart of a geographical region that is home to more than one billion people and accounts for more than a quarter of all global goods produced.

Dr. M. Mehdi EKER

Minister of Agriculture and Rural Affairs

Invitation
Ladies and Gentlemen,

Being the cradle of many civilizations since the dawn of history and now hosting the ISF 2009 World Seed Congress, Turkey is proud of being a bridge between the economies and industries of Asia and Europe and also between the cultures and civilizations of the East and the West. By taking the opportunity offered by the forth-coming Congress, I am very glad to invite you and your spouses to our country and welcome you with Turkish hospitality

A temporary or permanent home to many communities for more than ten thousand years, Turkey still attracts more than 20 million visitors every year from all over the world, thanks to Turkey’s natural, historical and cultural riches as well as to its hospitable people and advanced tourism agriculture.

Turkey has a significant genetic plant resources base and a rapidly growing seed industry which is well-connected with many of the world’s seed industries. It is a great excitement and an pleasure for us that our country is going to host the ISF 2009 World Seed Congress for the first time.

I have no doubt that the presence of those participants who come to Antalya for the ISF 2009 World Seed Congress from all over the world will bring about positive outcomes on the international seed trade and will further Turkey’s integration in the global seed market.

For these reasons, I cordially invite you to May’s 2009 ISF World Seed Congress in Turkey. We will be happy to have you and your spouses in Turkey so we may extend our traditional Turkish hospitality. I look forward to seeing all of you in Antalya.

Kind regards,

Dr. M. Mete KÖMEAĞAÇ

TÜRKTED Chairman of the Board

Invitation
Ladies and Gentlemen,

Turkey and the surrounding countries of the Middle East and Central Asia are the centres of origin of many cereals, pulses and vegetables that have become important food crops all over the world. Here man began plant breeding by the very act of harvesting seed of selected plants in the wild. That is why this region can rightly be called the cradle of plant breeding, which became the cradle of agriculture and subsequently the cradle of civilization.

Genetic resources of this region were freely distributed around the world to the benefit of mankind. Access to genetic resources as a global heritage remains high on the agenda of ISF although the Convention on Biological Diversity and the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture have defined new procedures of access and benefit sharing. The 2009 World Seed Congress will address access to genetic resources, amongst many other topics relevant to the seed industry worldwide, as it is essential to a steady and sustainable increase in food production. Millions of people, often subsistence farmers and their families, are still badly in need of food.

It is my pleasure to extend a warm invitation to you and your partners to the cradle of plant breeding in the beautiful setting of the city and beaches of Antalya. Thanks to the enthusiasm and professional organisational skills of the Turkish Seed Industry Association I know I can count on a successful and enjoyable congress.

Dr. Orlando de Ponti

President of ISF
