Dear distinguished radiologists of the world!

It will be a great joy and honour for me and my country to invite you for the 16th IVRA Meeting to Bursa. When I attended my very first International Meeting 1997 in Jerusalem I was so impressed by the organisation of the meeting, by the warm acceptance and encouragement of the ‘radiology family’ listening interestedly to my first presentation while ignoring the beating drums in my breast and tremble of my voice, that I decided to organize also a Meeting in Turkey. This idea, however, had to grow and develop like me, and when during later meetings people, meanwhile knowing me better, came to ask me, when they would come to Turkey for a meeting, I felt that the time had come to call out loudly: be our guests!

I am inviting you to Turkey, because

… I would like to respond to the hospitality I experienced when I was guest in your countries,
… there is an enormous natural, cultural, historical and artistic wealth in Turkey I would like to show you,
… Turkey is a marvellous country full of diversities regarding nature, population, traditions, religions, but people live tolerance, respect and benignity,
… Turkish people love to host and pamper guests from all over the world with honour, warm hospitality and delicious dishes,
… Turkey is a young country, eager to learn and to obtain up to date scientific knowledge. I am inviting you to Bursa, because
… it is an amazing city in a region where a winter paradise with a 2500m high mountain, the sea side (Marmara) with little harbours and fisher villages, two lakes and a green, fertile valley crossed by a river fed by water of the melting snow and extending peach plantations are within a distance of 25-30km to the city centre,
… Bursa, once a sleepy little town on the Silk Road, later the first capital of the Ottoman Empire, nowadays an enormous metropolis with 2 million inhabitants and many faces, a glorious mix of the modern and the ancient,
… we have natural warm water springs where in ancient times King Constantine and his wife Theodora took their beauty baths; today people come from all over the country to be cured from lots of diseases by the sanative mineral baths,
… Bursa is easy to reach, close to Istanbul and many other historical and touristic places and offers many opportunities to spend free time and to become acquainted with Turkish traditions, cuisine and hospitality,
… we are proud of our university, in a large campus of approximately 400 acres, with its 10 faculties, 2 high schools, 15 vocational schools, 1 conservatoire, 3 institutes and 18 Research and Application Centres teaching approximately 42,000 students and working hard to establish modern facilities and teaching to achieve European accreditation.

Unfortunately, we haven’t yet a Turkish Radiology Association or other comparable establishments, however, I am sure that such a meeting will wake up the enthusiasm and trigger our veterinarians as well as academicians to discover the fascination and depths of the ocean of diagnostic imaging. We have 21 very young Faculties of Veterinary Medicine distributed all over the country, full of dynamic academics who try to launch modern techniques and catch up with global knowledge and technology in order to contribute to animal and human health. If the Meeting would take place here it would be like: “If the prophet does not come to the mountain, then the mountain will go to the prophet”. So, a Meeting like this will open our minds and raise the value and appreciation of Radiology.

At the end, if the 16th of the IVRA Meetings, which have taken place since nearly a half-century, would be realized for the first time in Bursa / Turkey it will be an authentic experience and fascinating journey to history for you and a dream will come true for me. I hope, after the meeting, it will be the same for you, too.

Respectfully,

Deniz Seyrek-İntaş (DVM, PhD)
