We must make long-term plans and programs confirming to “sustainable city” vision if we are to leave more livable cities to future generations. The changes and developments in cities should be consistent with the well-balanced use of natural resources. For this reason, there is a need for the protection of environment through a strategically planned waste management. The efficient use of energy and water is of prime importance. The world is alarming for drought. Every drop of water is comparable to oil in terms of importance. Two thirds of the world population is expected to be effected from this drought problem by 2025.
This means that 1.8 billion people will be living in places facing the water shortage. Growing demand for water and the proper use of water resources are the common items of global agenda. We should keep in mind that the geometrically growing water problem will cause social and political problems and unrests in near future. The recycling of water has as much vital importance as the supply of clean water. Because, one liter of waste water contaminates eight liters of fresh water.
It is high time that our cities make a new initiative in the field of Advanced Biological Treatment. We, as Istanbul Metropolitan municipality, have made great investments on this issue and accumulated a significant amount of experience. We attach utmost importance to the sharing of this experience. We have to share our knowledge and experience in various fields ranging from waste management to environment and human health if our cities are to have a sustainable future.
For this reason, we are leading all scientific works and researches in the fields of solid waste, water and waste water and we provide support to these activities. We make proposals which may bring a valuable insight to policy and law makers. We provide support to the events and activities that may alleviate the problems of local authorities. We implement modern methods and practices in the light of technological advances. We keep up with all our efforts and activities to ensure the sustainability of cities all over the world. I am following an extremely important agenda on this issue as the President of Turkish Union of Municipalities, UNACLA and UCLG.For this reason, we lay the foundations of an international symposium for the sharing and exchange of experiences very much like we did in 5th World Water Forum.
We will host the “Istanbul International Solid Waste, Water and Waste Water Congress 2013” on 22-24 May 2013 at Haliç Congress Center. We join our forces at Istanbul3Wcongress 2013 to eliminate the drought problem all over the world. The symposium will be colored by presentations, fair and exhibition areas. We will host our guests from every corner of the world from Europe to Asia and Africa to America. With my best wishes of convening at Istanbul, the meeting point of continents, cultures, arts, history and science; I would like to invite you all to ISTANBUL-3WCONGRESS 2013.
