On behalf of the organizing committee of the fourth European Conference on Sludge Management-ECSM 2014, we would like to welcome all participants from all over the world to this Conference to be held on 26-27 May 2014 in İzmir, Turkey.
The management of sludge produced during water/wastewater treatment processes is one of the most difficult environmental problems to be solved in all over the World. Recently, the need to achieve a sustainable sludge management strategy has become of greater concern, also because the conventional and more traditional recycling options are progressively restricted by legislation. As the environmental regulations became stricter, the production of sludge in wastewater treatment facilities increased continuously. The new member states in Central and Eastern Europe have set out their National Strategies on Wastewater Treatment for 2010-2020 on the development of wastewater treatment facilities to meet the European requirements on wastewater treatment. So the development of innovative systems to maximize recovery of useful materials and/or energy from sludge in a sustainable way and to minimize the sludge production has become necessary.
The series of the Conference was first begun in University of Liege, Belgium in 2008 to share experience made in European countries in sludge management field and to raise awareness of the best technologies for sludge treatment, disposal and beneficial usage. The wide interest among participating scientists, researchers and engineers from European Universities, R&D laboratories, water agencies, governmental delegates, and private companies provided to establish a series of ECSM, with the second event held in Budapest, Hungary in 2010 and with the third event held in Leon, Spain in 2012. ECSM2014 will thus be the fourth of this Conference in İzmir, Turkey. Recently, ECSM has been supported by International Water Association Specialist Group on Sludge Management-IWA-SGSM.
ECSM2014 aims to create an effective platform to share the cutting edge scientific and technological knowledge on sludge management through this conference. It will bring together international experts of sludge management, scientists, researchers and engineers, R&D laboratories, water agencies, governmental delegates, and private companies to discuss the problems, solutions, and innovative technologies and systems for the sludge management of water and wastewater treatment field. We will be inviting internationally distinguished speakers working in this field and designing the technical sessions with the motivation to make the conference memorable, beneficial, and professionally inspiring.
The conference is intended for stakeholders from policy, business, science, industrial sectors, retailers and government organizations. Therefore, an “Environmental Exhibition” including water, wastewater, and sludge fields will also be organized in the same venue at the same time for the international and national companies, contractors, manufacturers, and suppliers dealing with this field. This will give a great opportunity for the companies to draw attention their products and services on a national, regional, and international level.
The conference provides unique opportunities to meet and network with colleagues from Europe with wide-ranging research interests and expertise in sludge management field. The venue for ECSM2014 is located in İzmir having all the beautiful natural scene, exciting history of the city, clean water and air environment, and traditional Turkish Cusine.
