Dear Colleagues and Friends,
It is our privilege and honour to announce our next meeting in İstanbul, the easternmost city of Europe, one year after the westernmost city of Europe, ESGAR 2007 Lisbon. On behalf of the Local Organizing Committee, we cordially invite you to ESGAR 2008, the 19th Annual Meeting and Postgraduate Course of the European Society of Gastrointestinal and Abdominal Radiology, in Istanbul, Turkey, from June 10 – 13, 2008. This meeting is the most important realisation of the educational efforts of ESGAR through Europe, and its organisation in Turkey is a great source of excitement and pleasure for our fellow radiologists, both in our country and in the entire region.
The main topic of this year’s meeting is the MDCT applications of the abdomen. Although only seven years have passed since the meeting with the same topic in ESGAR 2001, the amazing developments in this technology and its applications demanded that a new meeting be organised with the same headline. At this meeting, it is aimed to hold in-depth discussions, with the participation of the experts in the field, of the role of MDCT and its new and promising applications in the daily practice of abdominal radiology. The main schedule will consist of 10 lecture sessions and more than 30 workshops. Additionally, two foundation courses on radiologic-pathologic correlation and a ’hot topic’ session will also be on the agenda for the meeting. You may feel sure that the full scientific experience and competency of ESGAR will be projected into all of these sessions.
On behalf of ESGAR and the Local Organising Committee, we would also like to invite you to submit your scientific papers and posters for presentation in scientific sessions and in EPOS. With your help and highly valuable contribution, we are sure that the general quality of the discussions will increase tremendously.
Istanbul served as the capital city to three empires, respectively, East Roman, Byzantium and finally the Ottomans. Today, totally aware of its historical role, it is the economical and cultural centre of the Balkans and the middle-east. The city is the most important and valuable jewel of my country and attracts every fellow countryman. It is a magical city which is truly a bridge between Europe and Asia; a bridge between cultures and a melting pot of several civilisations. Istanbul has always been a city of tolerance and brotherhood, where mosques, churches and synagogues existed side by side. Now with ESGAR 2008, we will try to ascribe it a new role, as the bridge between different fellow radiologists where different experiences will be shared. We feel sure that, with the help of historical experience, Istanbul will also accomplish this hard task, with the help of the contributors.
Istanbul is the most densely populated city of Turkey, with a unique cosmopolitan character. It is full of different people of all colours and nations, where each of them live peacefully and in harmony together. Its great historical heritage makes it one of the most amazing historical sites of the world, where modernity and tradition are intermixed in every aspect of life. It is usual to see a huge modern building side by side with a historical temple or a palace. With the marks of all these civilisations, we are sure ESGAR 2008 will also be a great personal experience for all of you, as well as a scientific pleasure.
You will enjoy the beauty of the city and Bosphorus in June, which is accepted as ’high season’. You will have the chance to breath in the cosmopolitan essence while walking through the traditional and modern streets of the city, and to explore the history of the different empires while enjoying their reflections to modernity. By the way, before your departure, leave your diet lists aside and never forget to taste the marvels of Turkish cuisine, which is among the leading historical and important cuisines of the world.
We and our colleagues will be very happy to see you in our country and we will be pleased to show you the world-wide known Turkish hospitality and amicability.
Let’s meet where the continents meet.
